Did Video (Analytics) Kill the Second Striker? - The Flo Pass, Tactical Orthodoxy & the Question of State

Core Question

When a familiar shape is deliberately broken, what actually breaks first — the matchup, the preparation, or the opponent's State?

Video and analytics killed the second striker.

Or at least that is the story football tells about itself.

Two strikers used to be normal. Over the same period that video analysis and analytics became widespread, lone-striker systems, midfield overloads and additional central coverage became more common. Whether one caused the other, or merely accompanied it, is exactly the question this Reading declines to settle too early.

The second striker didn't disappear because somebody formally abolished it.

It became unusual.

And that may be the more interesting story.

The more interesting question is what happens after a tactical solution becomes common knowledge.

If everyone knows what the good shape looks like, can deliberately breaking that shape create an advantage?

And if it does, what kind of advantage is it?

A better structural matchup?

An information or preparation gap?

Or a change in the opponent's State — their ability to see the situation clearly and act on it?

The Flo Pass provides a useful way into that question.

The Flo Pass (Norwegian: Flo-pasningen)

In the early 1990s, Norway developed a move that became associated with Jostein Flo.

On paper, Norway could appear to be playing a conventional 4–5–1.

But the shape did not tell the whole story.

Flo was an unusually tall centre-forward. Rather than keeping him centrally against the opposition's centre-backs, Norway could move him towards the flank. A full-back would then play a long diagonal towards him.

The important detail was the defender.

Instead of asking a centre-back to compete with a tall centre-forward in the air, the move could create an aerial contest between Flo and a full-back.

The problem had been moved.

Norway had not simply decided to "play long."

It had changed who was being asked to solve the problem.

The initial aerial contest could then create a second-ball opportunity for midfielders or the striker, with Norway looking to exploit the situation before the opposition had reorganised. The Flo Pass became closely associated with Norway's direct style under Egil Olsen.

That makes it an unusually useful example for thinking about tactical orthodoxy — because there are at least three different explanations for why something like the Flo Pass might work, and football conversation routinely collapses them into one.

Exploring the Question Through FSL

Structural exploitation. The tactic creates a better matchup. Flo's height and aerial ability were valuable; the opposition's full-back was generally not the defender best equipped to deal with that particular threat. Moving Flo wide changed the matchup in Norway's favour. There is no need for a State explanation here, and no need for a theory of psychological disruption. The tactical logic can simply be: put your strongest aerial player against their weaker aerial defender. If a tactical phenomenon can be explained this way, that explanation has to stay on the table. Looking unusual does not make a tactic a State intervention.

Preparation evasion. A team may know an opponent plays 4–5–1, know the striker is tall, know the full-back has a good long pass — and still not have prepared a specific response to that combination. The problem is not that the opponent cannot understand the tactic. It is that it did not expect to have to solve this particular version of it. On this account the advantage should be vulnerable to learning: scout it, rehearse a response, and the apparent innovation has a half-life. That is not a weakness of the tactic. It is what should happen if the advantage comes primarily from information asymmetry.

It is worth keeping two ideas apart here, because analytics language tends to blur them. A measurement failure means the underlying models are poorly suited to representing the configuration at all. A preparation failure is narrower and more mundane — the configuration is perfectly understandable in principle, but this opponent, on this occasion, simply hadn't drilled a response to it. Most of what gets called "analytics couldn't see it" is really the second, weaker claim, borrowing the drama of a model failure for what may just be undone homework.

State disruption. Suppose the opponent knows exactly what is coming. The scout has shown the video. The full-back knows Flo may move wide. The centre-back knows the diagonal may be coming. The midfielders know roughly where the second ball is likely to fall. And yet, when the situation actually occurs, the team still struggles to coordinate its response. That would be a different phenomenon. The problem would not be a lack of information. It would be the live cost of organising around information the team already has.

These three mechanisms can coexist inside a single passage. A Flo Pass could simultaneously create a favourable aerial matchup, exploit a preparation gap, and temporarily degrade the opponent's ability to reorganise. The point of separating them is not to identify one in advance. It is to stop treating all three as the same finding.

## Predictably difficult is more interesting than unpredictable

This may be the most important distinction in the whole argument.

Football often talks about unpredictability as though it were inherently valuable. But a tactic does not have to be unpredictable to be difficult. The Flo Pass was eventually well known. Opponents knew Norway might play the diagonal. They could prepare for it. Yet the tactical problem remained: who deals with Flo, where does the first ball go, who attacks the second ball, and how quickly can the defensive structure reorganise?

Knowing the question does not necessarily mean solving it in real time.

That gives a more useful working definition:

> A tactic is State-disruptive if it creates a problem whose live coordination cost remains significant even after the opponent has been informed about it.

That is testable, and importantly, it is falsifiable.

## Clarity and Agency are not the same failure

If State disruption is the mechanism, it still matters which part of State is affected, and FSL's two proposed dimensions are not interchangeable here.

A collapse in Clarity would look like disagreement about the picture itself — the full-back expects cover from the centre-back, the centre-back expects the full-back to engage alone, and the team's shared sense of who is solving the problem breaks down before anyone has made a visibly bad decision.

A collapse in Agency would look different — the picture might still be shared and correct, but the team's meaningful options have narrowed. Everyone agrees Flo has to be dealt with by the full-back; there simply isn't a good second option available once that duel is lost, and the team is now reacting rather than choosing.

These are not the same disruption, and a tactic might produce one without the other. A configuration that confuses who should respond is a Clarity problem. A configuration that leaves a team with no good response even once everyone agrees on the problem is an Agency problem. Treating "Clarity and/or Agency" as one bundled outcome, as loose descriptions of tactical disruption often do, throws away exactly the distinction that makes the two-dimension model worth having.

## Reading two passages: matchup or State?

Consider two passages with broadly similar starting conditions. In both, a full-back receives possession, a tall forward is available in the wide channel, and the opposition defends in a familiar mid-block.

Passage A

The full-back plays the diagonal. The forward wins the header cleanly, well clear of the nearest defender, who was never realistically positioned to contest it. The knockdown falls to a supporting midfielder in space. The opposition's shape was numerically light on that side before the ball was even played.

Passage B

The full-back plays the same diagonal. The forward and the nearest defender contest it evenly — it could go either way. The knockdown is scrappy. But in the two seconds after the flick-on, three defenders converge on the same small area while the space in behind them opens up untended, and by the time anyone moves to cover it, the opportunity has already passed.

Which passage is mainly structural exploitation, and which looks more like a State problem?

There is no answer supplied here.

It is tempting to reach for a tidy split — Passage A as the matchup story, Passage B as the State story, because the defenders converge on the ball rather than the space. That reading is plausible. It is not the point. If two careful readers land on different explanations for the same passage, that is a sign the taxonomy needs sharper observable markers before it can be used with confidence — not a sign the taxonomy is wrong.

## The danger of calling everything State

Suppose the Flo Pass creates an aerial mismatch. Flo wins the duel. Norway wins the second ball. Norway creates a chance.

It would be tempting to say: the opposition's Clarity and Agency were disrupted.

That conclusion does not follow automatically. Perhaps Flo simply won because he was six inches taller. Perhaps the full-back was simply the weaker aerial player. Perhaps Norway had a numerical advantage around the second ball. Perhaps the entire phenomenon is adequately explained by conventional physical and spatial variables.

In that case, there is no need for FSL.

This is not a problem for FSL. It is exactly the test FSL needs. A proposed State construct should not be protected from simpler explanations.

Alternative Explanations

The paragraph above deals with the simplest alternative to this specific example. But there are broader reasons the whole pattern — unusual configurations succeeding, then becoming familiar, then losing their edge — might not need a State-level explanation at all.

Survivorship bias. The Flo Pass is remembered because it was effective and became closely identified with a distinctive, successful international side. Direct, physically-oriented approaches that were tried and failed to disrupt organised opposition are not part of that story, because they didn't produce a memorable outcome worth naming. If the sample of "unorthodox tactics that worked" is selected after the fact by its own success, the apparent pattern of counter-orthodoxy reliably beating orthodoxy may be considerably weaker than it looks from the examples that get discussed.

The orthodoxy may be overstated. The framing here depends on football having converged on a reasonably uniform "good shape" against which departures stand out. That convergence is probably real to some degree, but tactical variation across leagues, competitions and even a single team's approach to different opponents has always been considerable. If the baseline "orthodoxy" is less uniform than the story implies, there is less of a stable reference point for anything to disrupt in the first place.

Player quality may explain most of the effect. Flo's specific height and aerial ability were unusual. A tactic built around an exceptional individual attribute may simply be exploiting that attribute, with the wider "orthodoxy versus counter-orthodoxy" framing adding drama rather than explanation. If the same configuration, run with an ordinary aerial forward, produces no comparable effect, that would suggest the tactic's value was mostly about the player rather than the shape.

Apparent persistence after preparation may reflect incomplete preparation, not a genuine coordination cost. The claim that State disruption survives even once an opponent "knows what's coming" depends on a clean line between knowing about a tactic and having actually rehearsed a matched response to it at full intensity. That line is blurrier than it sounds. A team that has watched the video and been told the plan is not necessarily a team that has drilled the specific coordination required, under realistic pressure, enough times to close the gap. What looks like State surviving preparation could, in some cases, just be preparation that was never as complete as it appeared on paper.

What Evidence Would This Need?

If FSL is going to make a serious contribution here, the evidence needs to separate the three explanations rather than simply demonstrate that an unusual tactic sometimes precedes success.

1. Establish whether the structural advantage exists.

Does the tactic actually create a better matchup? Aerial ability, defender identity, physical mismatch, location of the duel, second-ball location, numerical support and resulting field position would all need to be considered. If these variables explain the outcome, the State hypothesis may add little — a useful result in itself.

2. Establish whether preparation matters — and whether the response is consistent.

Compare first exposure, subsequent exposure, opponent-specific preparation and repeated use. If the advantage falls sharply after preparation, that supports the preparation-evasion explanation; if it persists, the State hypothesis becomes more interesting. The cleanest version of this test isn't unusual tactics versus normal tactics in the abstract, but the same opponent facing the same configuration more than once. If that opponent shows a consistent Clarity or Agency response to a specific configuration across separate matches, the signal is more trustworthy than one bad half in one game.

3. Measure the opponent's State before the outcome — and separate Clarity from Agency.

Independent observers would rate Clarity and Agency as two distinct scores, before knowing what happens next. Not "they conceded, therefore their Agency was low," but "at this moment, how shared and stable is their picture?" and, separately, "at this moment, how much initiative and meaningful choice do they retain?" Keeping the two scores apart, rather than reporting a single combined impression, is what allows a later result to say which part of State a configuration actually disrupts.

4. Measure the disrupting team's own State at the same moments.

The same two-score protocol — Clarity and Agency, rated blind to outcome — should be applied to the team executing the disruption, at the same cut points. Without this, the evidence can only ever describe an opponent's cost, never the trade the disrupting team is actually making. A configuration that reliably costs the disrupting team as much Clarity or Agency as it costs the opponent is a very different finding from one that costs the opponent significantly more than it costs its author.

5. Compare State against conventional measures.

If Clarity and Agency merely reproduce field position, possession, numerical superiority, pressure, pitch control or expected threat, FSL may simply be providing new words for existing information. The stronger finding would be that two situations that look similar through conventional measures produce systematically different State ratings — and that those differences help explain what happens next.

A convincing result would need more than unusual shape → successful attack. It would require:

* no structural advantage large enough to explain the effect on its own

* prior opponent preparation for the configuration

* a measurable pre-outcome reduction in Clarity, Agency, or both — with observers agreeing which

* persistence across repeated or prepared exposure

* an effect not explained by conventional output or spatial measures

* a smaller State cost for the disrupting team than for its opponent

Not proof. Evidence.

The hypothesis weakens if any of the reverse holds: the advantage falls away once the opponent has prepared, conventional metrics explain the outcome, observers cannot agree on the State change, or the effect disappears once player quality is controlled for. Any of those would be a legitimate result. Perhaps the Flo Pass was simply structural exploitation, and "disruption" was always just a colourful word for a physical mismatch. FSL should be designed so that it can reach that conclusion.

Potential Implications

If some version of State disruption survives that testing, a few things follow.

Orthodoxy would need to be understood as something that manufactures its own blind spots. Orthodoxy is not inherently bad — it is accumulated knowledge, what football has learned to be reliable. But reliability creates expectations, and expectations create reference points that a deliberately unusual configuration can exploit. That gives a rough cycle: innovation, success, measurement, dissemination, orthodoxy, familiarity, counter-orthodoxy, new innovation. Nothing about that cycle is new to football. What would be new is a way of observing the middle of it — the point at which a once-novel solution becomes so familiar that its very familiarity creates the opening for something else — rather than only recognising the cycle in hindsight, once a new innovation has already succeeded. On this reading, the second striker's decline is less a settled verdict on two-striker football and more a case study in what happens once an old solution becomes unusual enough to disrupt teams drilled against its replacement.

Tactical value could be measured as a cost differential, not a one-sided effect. A team that deliberately creates asymmetry — a centre-back stepping into midfield, a full-back pushing high, an unfamiliar pressing structure — is not disrupting its opponent for free. Every one of those choices can alter the disrupting team's own Clarity and Agency as much as the opponent's. A proper account of "does disruption work" cannot ask only what the opponent lost. It has to ask what the disrupting team paid for the advantage, and whether the difference between the two costs is what actually explains the result. That reframes recruitment and coaching questions around counter-orthodox approaches: not simply "does this confuse the opponent," but "does it confuse the opponent more than it costs us."

If the effect does not survive testing, that is also informative, and in a specific way: it would suggest that tactical innovation in football is best understood as an information race — models and preparation eventually catching up to whatever is unusual — rather than anything to do with a live perceptual or coordination cost. That would be a legitimate and useful conclusion. It would mean the right response to a counter-orthodox opponent is simply better preparation, not a different kind of attention.

## A narrower claim than the title suggests

Did Video (Analytics) Kill the Second Striker? is a question, not a verdict, and the essay should be read that way throughout.

This Reading does not establish that analytics caused the decline of two-striker systems. It does not establish that the lone striker is a superior tactical solution. It does not establish that counter-orthodox tactics reliably outperform orthodox ones. It does not establish that the Flo Pass succeeded because it disrupted State, and it does not establish that Clarity and Agency are valid measures.

What it proposes is a way of separating explanations that are routinely collapsed into one another. When an unusual tactical configuration succeeds, it may be because it creates a better matchup, because the opponent has not adequately prepared for it, or because the opponent struggles to establish a shared and actionable response in real time even once it has the information it needs. These explanations can coexist. But they make different predictions — about what happens after preparation, about which of Clarity or Agency is affected, and about what the disrupting team itself pays for the advantage. That is what makes them researchable rather than merely plausible.

The Flo Pass is useful because it shows how a tactical idea can move a problem from one part of the opposition's structure to another. The second striker is useful because it raises the question of what happens when that kind of alternative becomes unusual. And analytics is useful because it gives a way of asking whether those changes are visible in the data already being collected.

The remaining question is whether something important happens in between.

Perhaps the advantage of changing the shape is not simply that the opponent sees something different. Perhaps it is that, for a moment, the opponent cannot turn what it sees into a shared and actionable response.

If that effect exists, FSL may have something useful to describe.

If it does not, that is useful too.

The point is not to make every tactical explanation a State explanation.

The point is to find out whether State explains anything the other explanations cannot.
